ARTS AND CULTURE

ATTEND A PERFORMANCE AT THE OVERTURE
The Overture Center features seven state-of-the-art performance spaces and four galleries where Broadway tours, national and international touring artists, nine resident companies and hundreds of local artists engage people in nearly 700,000 educational and artistic experiences each year. With the vision to “create extraordinary experiences through the arts,” Overture’s mission is to “Support and elevate our community’s creative culture, economy and quality of life through the arts.” While there are multiple shows playing during your time here (you can browse all the events on this page), the most notable is:
  • SHUCKED, OFF-BROADWAY SHOW--"Shucked" is the Tony Award®–winning musical comedy The Wall Street Journal calls “flat out hilarious!” And nobody knows funny like economists. Join Maizy, the spunky heroine, as she battles to save her beloved crop with the help of a con man posing as a "corn doctor." Get ready for a wild ride filled with toe-tapping country tunes, side-splitting jokes and a whole lot of heart. Will Maizy save the day and find true love, or will the corny jokes be the only thing popping? To learn more and purchase tickets, please visit the Overture's website.

VIEW WORLD-CLASS ART AT THE CHAZEN
The Chazen Museum of Art makes its home between two lakes on the beautiful campus of the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Within walking distance of the state capitol, it sits squarely in the heart of a vibrant college town. Within the Chazen’s 176,000 square feet of museum space is a collection of approximately 25,000 works of art covering diverse historical periods, cultures and geographic locations, from ancient Greece, Western Europe and the Soviet Empire to Moghul India, 18th-century Japan and modern Africa. Often ranked as one of the top university art museums in the country and conveniently located a couple of blocks from the lake, the Chazen is a must-see. Excite your inner art critic and get a sneak-preview of some of the pieces in their collection here.

TAKE A WALK THROUGH OLBRICH BOTANICAL GARDENS
The Olbrich Botanical Gardens are a serene escape that shines even in the heart of winter. The outdoor gardens transform into a tranquil snowy landscape, perfect for peaceful walks and appreciating the quiet beauty of frosted trees and sculptures. The real winter gem, however, is the Bolz Conservatory—a lush, tropical oasis where you can wander among exotic plants, nearly 1000 vibrant orchids, and even free-flying birds, providing a warm retreat from the chilly Wisconsin weather. Seasonal events like holiday light displays and botanical-themed workshops add to the charm, making Olbrich a must-visit for both nature lovers and those seeking a cozy winter escape.

SPORTS

ROOT FOR THE BADGERS AT A BASKETBALL GAME
Attending a Wisconsin Badgers basketball game at the Kohl Center is an unforgettable experience filled with electric energy and school spirit. From the moment you step into the arena, you’re surrounded by a sea of red and white, passionate fans, and the thrilling buzz of anticipation. The Badgers' fierce gameplay keeps you on the edge of your seat, while the crowd’s chants, the band’s fight songs, and the iconic Nitty Gritty "Burger Jumble" create a sense of camaraderie like no other. Whether you're a die-hard fan or a first-time visitor, a Badgers basketball game is more than a sporting event—it's a celebration of Wisconsin pride and a night of high-energy entertainment for all ages. Don’t miss your chance to be part of this unforgettable Badger tradition! There are games on February 1st, 4th, and 8th (Saturday, Tuesday, Saturday). Note: The game on Tuesday 4 Feb. vs. Indiana is a "White Out " game--wear a white shirt! To view the schedule, purchase tickets, and see the scores of previous games in the season, visit this page

BE READY TO SMACK THE GLASS AT A WISCONSIN HOCKEY GAME
Attending a Wisconsin Badgers hockey game (also) at the Kohl Center is a high-energy experience that immerses fans in the thrilling world of college hockey. The speed and intensity on the ice keep everyone on edge, but it’s the lively atmosphere in the stands that makes the experience truly unique. The student section, referred to as as the Crease Creatures, are known for their creativity, enthusiasm, and relentlessness, and they lead the crowd in boisterous chants like “Sieve! Sieve!” to taunt opposing goalies, "Cheaters!" when the opposing team fouls, "P-U-T-I-T-I-N... Put it in!" to encourage their own team, among many (much more creative...) others which you can only hear in the hockey arena. While basketball is more generally popular, the energy of hockey-goers far outweighs their counterparts, making this an unforgettable experience.
  • Wisconsin Men's Hockey: Games are on 7-8 Feb. (Friday-Saturday). You can see the full schedule and purchase tickets here.
  • Wisconsin Women's Hockey: Female sports are often overlooked, but that isn't the case when you're talking about the Wisconsin Badger's Women's Hockey Team. Since the pandemic, they have brought home two national titles (2021, 2023) and made it to the final round once (2024), with 2022 being their "off" year (psst... they still made it to the quarterfinals). THIS is the team to see if you are in the mood for some of the best players in the nation. They play in the La Bahn arena on 8-9 Feb. (Saturday-Sunday), but there's a catch: tickets are sold out. I still mention this activity, however, since it is possible to buy a ticket from a reseller (such as Stubhub or Ticket Master) and the quality of game is absolutely worth it. The skill of these women is undeniable. You need to see it to believe it.
  • Madison Capitols: If you would prefer a calmer atmosphere, you can also break away from downtown Madison and take a short ride to the other side of the lake to see the Madison Capitols, a Tier I junior ice hockey team that plays in the Eastern Conference of the United States Hockey League. They have games on 1 Feb. (Saturday) and 7-8 Feb. (Saturady-Sunday).  Tickets are available for purchase here (link is also found under the "Tickets" tab of their main website).
